Dear Host Family,

My name is Lars, and I’m 15 years old. I live in a small town in the middle of Germany with my family. I have a younger sister, and my parents are both busy with their jobs—my mom is a teacher, and my dad works as a managing director for a software company. My extended family, like my grandparents, uncles, and aunts, live in Northern Germany, and we visit them often during the holidays. I really enjoy spending time with them.

I’m really excited about the idea of spending a high school year in the U.S. because I’ve always admired the country and its culture. When I was younger, I lived in California for four years with my family, but I was too young to remember much of it. That’s why I’m eager to return to the U.S. and experience life with a local family. One of the things I love most about the U.S. is its amazing and diverse nature, with deserts, mountains, forests, and plains. I think it would be really cool to see some of these places while I’m there. I’ve also heard that American high schools offer a lot of opportunities for students, and I’d love to experience that. I’m really curious to see what school is like in the U.S. compared to Germany.

Another thing I admire about the U.S. is how many different people live there from all kinds of backgrounds. I think it’s awesome how diverse the country is, and I’m excited to learn more about American traditions, holidays, and daily life. I’m really looking forward to meeting my host family and becoming part of your home. It will be fun to see how you celebrate and what your normal routine is like and maybe tell you something about my daily life in Germany.

In my free time, I like to stay active. I enjoy fencing, tennis, skiing, and sailing. I also recently started playing the trombone and am part of my school’s jazz band. I’m not very good yet, but I’m learning! I also love spending time outdoors, hiking and biking, and exploring new places. Besides that, I’m really interested in things like technology, planes, ships, math, and science. I like to think of myself as someone who enjoys learning new things and trying new activities. While I’d like to keep doing some of my hobbies in the U.S., I’m also open to trying new things I haven’t done before.

When I’m older, I think I’d like to study engineering because it combines my interests in technology and science. I’m really interested in space travel and ships, and I think engineering would be a cool career to pursue. Spending a year in the U.S. could help me learn new things that might be helpful for my future.

I’m really looking forward to getting to know you and becoming part of your family. I’m excited for the experiences we’ll share and the things I’ll learn during my time in the U.S. Thank you for considering my application. I hope to meet you soon!

Sincerely, Lars
