Dear host family,
My name is Llibertat (which means freedom), but everyone calls me Llibert. First of all, I would like to thank you for deciding to welcome me into your home. I’m very excited to have the opportunity to be part of your family during my stay in the United States. It makes me so happy, and I’m glad to write to you so you can get to know a little more about me.
I live in a peaceful and beautiful city on the east coast of Spain. The weather is very pleasant, and in my community, we enjoy organizing events and outdoor activities.
At home, it’s just my parents and me. I don’t have any siblings. My grandparents, uncles, and cousins live very close to us. My grandparents are very important to me. I love them so much, and I enjoy spending time with them and listening to their stories about their lives. I also have a large extended family with whom I maintain a close relationship. My relationship with my parents is very close and based on mutual respect and trust. We love spending time together, whether it’s playing board games, watching movies, cooking… We also love traveling together. What I enjoy the most with them is talking because in our conversations, we always cover very interesting topics that help me learn about things I didn’t know, like psychology, philosophy, science… Even topics that don’t seem especially interesting end up becoming engaging.
I also love spending time with my friends. We really enjoy having dinner at each other’s houses and then playing board games. My house is a common meeting place, and I always try to make my friends feel as though they’re at home. We’re a big group but very united since many of us have known each other since we were three years old, and the others seem like we’ve known each other our entire lives, even though we’ve only been friends for a few years.
I have many hobbies. One of them is listening to music. I enjoy almost all genres, especially rock, pop, and salsa. I can listen to music in any format, but I really like vinyl records, and I have a small collection. I also love going to concerts. I enjoy discovering new artists and songs.
I also like cooking, especially making savory dishes like pizza or sandwiches. What I like most about cooking is seeing how others enjoy the food I’ve prepared. Like most people, I have certain preferences, but I don’t have any issues with specific foods, and I’m willing to try and learn to cook new dishes.
Another passion of mine is movies and TV series. I particularly like those filled with suspense and mystery, the ones that keep you on edge and spark curiosity. Also, in cinema, I love romance, and my favorite movie is 10 Things I Hate About You. I also enjoy reading, both on paper and digitally, and I try to read a little every day. My favorite author is Joana Marcus. To me, cinema and reading are like transporting oneself to a different world and living different lives and adventures.
Traveling is another one of my great passions. I’ve had the opportunity to visit several cities in Spain and Europe. I find cities fascinating (their culture, architecture, people, gastronomy...), but I’m especially drawn to nature. I love relaxing outdoors and taking in mountain landscapes, but I also love the sea.
In addition, I really enjoy debating. I love discussing topics like current affairs, psychology, and philosophy, exchanging ideas, and hearing different points of view.
I really enjoy editing both presentations and videos for school projects. I then present the presentations to my classmates, and I feel very comfortable speaking in public. I always volunteer, even if the tasks aren’t mandatory because I enjoy the editing process.
I love animals. We’ve always had pets at home (dogs, birds, turtles, fish, hamsters, and cats). Right now, I have a cat named Fobos. I chose that name as a reference to Greek mythology and the moon of Mars. I love him so much. He’s very important in my life. I love spending time with him, enjoying his company, petting him, and playing with him.
In the future, I would like to study English Philology and become an English teacher. I’m excited about the idea of motivating my future students to learn English, using my experience of having lived and studied in the United States. I’ll not only be able to teach them the language but also share the rich culture of such an amazing country.
Regarding my future plans and projects, my parents have had a great influence on my life. I’m always learning from them, not only knowledge but also values (respect, tolerance, manners…).
They’ve always encouraged me to follow my dreams and have supported me in reaching the small goals I set for myself to get to the ultimate goal I wanted. Another person who has influenced my life and encouraged me to consider studying a year in the U.S. was an instructor I met during a summer activity. His life seemed fascinating. He had traveled, lived, and studied in many places around the world. Despite his youth, he seemed wise. It was clear that the culture of the different countries he had visited had been enriching for him. I’d like to be like him in some ways, experiencing things that help me grow (academically and personally) and live such an interesting life as his.
Learning the English language plays an important role in my future plans. It’s a vital language for traveling and connecting with people from all over the world, and I believe mastering it will allow me to expand my horizons and open up more opportunities in life.
I want to spend an academic year abroad because I believe it will help me become more independent, even though I think I already am. I know that this experience will allow me to grow and prepare for the future. I’m also interested in experiencing a different educational system, which could offer me opportunities to learn things that I wouldn’t study in Spain and that could be very beneficial for my development. Of course, improving my English is a big motivation, as well as discovering the country’s culture, traditions, and gastronomy while sharing my own.
I believe I can bring many valuable things to my host family. Although I may be somewhat reserved at first, I’m actually an extroverted person once I feel more comfortable. I consider myself a kind, respectful, polite, open-minded, and responsible person. I love learning from others, and I’d love to share my interests with you. I would gladly talk about my culture and my country, which are an important part of my life, and I’m also eager to learn about yours, get to know your traditions and customs, and enrich ourselves with everything we can exchange. I’d love to help with household chores and actively participate in family life, integrating into and respecting the rules of coexistence you establish. I’m willing to adapt to your lifestyle and give my best at all times.
Once again, I want to express my sincere gratitude for opening the doors of your home and allowing me to experience this meaningful and special opportunity. I’m full of excitement to meet you and have the honor of being part of your family and your community.
With love,
Llibert
