Dear Host Family,

My name is Jan Magnus, and I am beyond excited to introduce myself to you! First of all, I want to say how grateful I am for this opportunity. Spending a year in the U.S. is something I have dreamed of for a long time, and I truly appreciate that you are opening your home to me. I am looking forward to getting to know you, experiencing life in the U.S., and becoming a part of your family.

I am 16 years old and currently in 10th grade. I love being active, learning new things, and challenging myself every day. My biggest passion in life is self-improvement—I always strive to become a better version of myself, whether it’s in sports, academics, or personal growth. That’s one of the main reasons why I wanted to do an exchange year. I believe that stepping out of my comfort zone and immersing myself in a new culture will help me grow in ways I can’t even imagine yet.

 My Hobbies

Sports play a huge role in my life. I love playing basketball and soccer, and I hope to join a team at my American high school. Being part of a sports team is an amazing way to make friends, push my limits, and work towards a common goal. In the winter, I really enjoy snowboarding—it’s an incredible feeling to ride down the mountains. When it gets warmer, I love spending time on the water, especially kayaking and stand-up paddling. These activities allow me to be in nature and challenge myself physically at the same time.

Apart from sports, I also have a passion for cooking. I love experimenting with new recipes and learning about different cuisines. I would love to share some traditional German dishes with you, and I’m excited to try American food as well! Another big part of my life is music—I have been playing the violin for five years. Music helps me relax, focus, and express myself in a unique way.

My Goals for the Exchange Year

This year in the U.S. is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I want to make the most of it. My biggest goals are:

  • Becoming a real part of your family. I want to share experiences, help with daily life, and create a strong bond with you
  • Making new friends, both at school and in the community.
  • Joining a sports team and giving my best to train to come close to their skill level.
  • Going on trips and exploring different places with you and maybe even with new friends
  • Improving my english skills to the point where I can speak fluently and naturally.

My Long-Term Goals in Life

Beyond this exchange year, I have big goals for my future. I want to become financially free, so I have the freedom to live life on my own terms. Staying active and reaching my full physical potential is also very important to me—I always want to challenge my body and stay in great shape. Most importantly, I want to be able to take care of my family and provide them with the best possible life.

I know that this exchange year will be full of challenges, new experiences, and unforgettable memories. While I am a bit nervous about adapting to a new environment, I am mainly excited to embrace this adventure with an open heart and mind. Thank you again for giving me this opportunity—I can’t wait to meet you and start this incredible journey together!

Best regards,

Jan Magnus
