Dear host family,
Hi, my name is G., I’m 16 years old, and I’d like to live for six months in the USA.
My family consists of me, my mother, my dad, my sister and my cat. We always try to look out for each other, and when one needs a helping hand, there’s always someone who offers. Me and my sister try to participate in house chores as much as possible. We set the table and clean our own rooms every day, and with our parents we take turns on washing the dishes.
I attend what is considered to be one of the most difficult school types in Italy. I study and translate Ancient Greek and Latin to Italian, I also study Philosophy, Italian, History, Art History, English, Science and Religion. We also have two hours of P.E., during which we mostly play volleyball. I personally like my school, and I think I made the right choice when picking the type of school I wanted to go to after middle school; in fact, in Italy, after middle school, every student has to choose between different schools, that each have their main subjects, which they are supposed to teach better than the other schools. As an example, there’s the Scientifico, that focuses mainly on Math and Science, or the Classico, the one I attend, which gives more attention to humanistic subjects, such as Literature and Philosphy. In addition to that, it's the only one that teaches to translate Antient Greek.
When I’m not studying or at school, I mostly spend my time playing basketball either inside, at practice, or outside, at my hometown’s park, that has an outdoor court in it. I love playing basketball, and since I was a child, I’ve always dreamt of going to your country, to see my favorite players play; I like playing basketball so much because it helps me relieve the stress that schoolwork generates, and the need I feel to get better at it makes me want to improve myself every day.
When I’m not playing basketball, I like to listen to music, and recently I’ve been trying to produce some of my own. I also like to draw and during the weekends I go out with my friends. We usually walk around and get ice cream at our favorite ice cream shop.
I feel the need to explore, to get out of my comfort zone, and by that, I mean to get in touch with a culture that’s different from mine, from which I can learn a lot about the world around me.
I look forward to having this experience, which I think will be not only fun, but also and most importantly educational, for me as well as for you; in fact, I’ve already participated in a similar program, for a way shorter period of time, only two weeks, and I found that engaging with people that think and act in a completely different way compared to yours can lead to unexpected conclusions and can help to reflect on others and yourself.
In conclusion, I hope that you find my letter interesting, and that you’ll choose me as your hosted student.

Thank you for your attention,
G.
