Dear Host Family,

Hello! My name is Doyeon. I’m fourteen years old, and I’m from South Korea. I am very happy and thankful to be your exchange student. This is my first time living abroad being away from my family for such a long period. I am very excited and little bit nervous as well. To briefly introduce myself;

I am interested in many things including arts, sports, culture and people. I have been playing the Gayageum(Korean musical instrument) for five years, and I am also passionate about Taekwondo(Korean martial arts). I have been practicing taekwondo for ten years and have achieved black belt level. This long term activities have taught me resilience and helped me build confidence in my abilities.

I consider myself a warm and friendly person, and I am very dedicated to my studies. This is reflected in the fact that I received the highest results in my grade during the Grade 8 exams. In my free time, I enjoy drawing traditional Korean Minhwa art, which I’ve been studying in art lessons for the past three years. This beautiful art form has helped me develop critical thinking and strong attention to detail.

I’ve also competed in various public speaking competitions in both English and Korean. These experiences have not only taught me how to communicate confidently but have also inspired me to continuously improve my language skills. I have been learning English for about 8 years, and I believe that my diverse experiences will help me to adjust well in the US life.

I applied for this program because I really wanted to experience American culture, improve my English, and meet new people from different backgrounds. I believe this exchange will help me grow, not only in my studies but also as a person. I am very excited to learn about your daily life, traditions, and even small things like what you usually eat or how you spend weekends. At the same time, I would love to share my own culture, food, and stories with you. I think this kind of exchange is special because we can learn from each other like a real family.

I know that studying and living in another country can sometimes be challenging, but I am ready to do my best. I will try hard to communicate in English, even if I make mistakes, and I will not give up easily. I want to help in the house and be responsible, because I hope you can see me not just as a guest, but as a family member.

I respect your decision to have an exchange student whom you never met, you even don't know much about, who has different backgrounds, skin/eye/hair colors. I know how difficult decision you have made, I want to be a good addition to your family.

I feel lucky to have this opportunity, and I promise I will do my best to make this exchange experience meaningful, happy, and full of memories for all of us. Thank you so much for opening your home to me. I look forward to meeting you soon!

Sincerely,

Doyeon
