Dear Host Family,
Hello! I hope you are doing well. My name is Yu Wei, and I’m truly thankful for the opportunity to be part of your family during my exchange experience. I would love to use this letter to introduce myself, my family, and what I hope to gain from this exciting journey.
I live with my parents and three older siblings. My father works as a medical sales representative and my mother is an accountant. My eldest sister is working at an insurance company while my eldest brother is a teacher and a sports enthusiast. My second sister is currently studying at university. All of my siblings were excellent academically, and I’m especially proud that both of my sisters achieved scored top grades for the Malaysian national examination for high schoolers. Their success is an inspiration for me to also do well myself, and I always look forward to family dinners when my siblings come home. Our family also goes travelling every year as a form of family bonding.
I do my share of household chores as part of my daily routine. I usually put my clothes away every day after school and sweep the floor every other days. On weekends, I help out in the kitchen, do the dishes and iron my clothes. I owe it to my mother, who taught me how to be a more responsible person through these small household chores. Nowadays, I'm able to take care of myself no matter where I go.
I have many interests, including sports, music and books. I've been involved in a variety of sports since I was a child such as badminton, basketball, table tennis, swimming and track and field. Through these team and individual sports, I've learned how to persevere in the face of challenges and the importance of teamwork. For example, in a team sport like basketball, as captain, I not only need to ensure my skills are a valuable asset to the team and a source of confidence for the coach, but I also need to ensure effective communication with my teammates. I always try to make sure that everyone feels a part of the family in victory and defeat. As for music, I enjoy listening to a wide variety of music in my free time, including both Chinese and English pop. As for books, I prefer to read about psychology. I find the topic very interesting as I feel that I'm able to analyze people around me better and it makes our interaction more fun. and purposeful. I also find that reading helps reduce my reliance on my phone, which has helped me develop the ability to think deeply and thoughtfully. After all, a profound book offers new insights each time I read it.
My hometown is a small, but it is rich in heritage and culture. Although my town is not as developed as a big city, I think this actually preserves our unique flavour. I have three close friends who I've known for more than half a decade. We often get together to play basketball and study groups before the exams. We also occasionally have dinner together just to catch up and chill. One of my close friends is actually from a different race, and our friendship is as strong as ever. In fact, I think it makes it better because we always tell each other something things about our own culture that we wouldn't have known otherwise.
After graduation, I plan to pursue medicine and ecology because I major in science in high school and my interest is in Biology and Chemistry. Furthermore, I've always been passionate in the environment because I feel that we can all play our part in preserving the environment. I want to contribute to restoring and protecting this beautiful planet so that our future generations can continue to live and enjoy what we have. I always believe that this Earth isn't ours; it's ours on loan from the next generation, so we have an obligation to protect it.
From this student exchange, I hope I'm able to become a global citizen - someone who understands and respects different cultures, communicates across borders, and works toward a better world. For the next six months, I look forward to making new friends, learning from your family and sharing my own culture with you. This valuable experience shall be my first steps towards changing the world for the better. Perhaps my story can also inspire younger students to boldly pursue their dreams, rather than feeling inferior just because they come from a small town.
Thank you in advance for opening your home to me. I am truly looking forward to meeting you and starting this meaningful journey together.
Sincerely,
Yu Wei
