Dear Host Family,

My name is Iker. I’m from the coast of Spain, and I am very excited to have the opportunity to do an exchange year in the USA. I would like to tell you a little bit about myself so you can get to know me better.

I consider myself a cheerful, fun, organized, and responsible person. I love discovering new places and learning about different cultures. I’m very family-oriented, and I love spending time with my family and friends. I live with my mom, my dad, my brother, and I also have a dog. I’m very close to my grandmothers, and I spent much of my childhood with one of them; she taught me a lot of things—for example, my love for animals, cooking, and many things that have shaped who I am today. I’m also very close to my aunts and uncles. They have always supported me and taught me many things as well. Honestly, my best memories are the family dinners when, at least once a week, we meet at my grandmother’s house and have dinner all together.

My brother is my life partner. He has given me a lot of advice and helped me with everything. He is dedicated to cycling, and because of that, we spend a lot of time apart, but I don’t think that matters because, although we don’t spend as much time together as I’d like, the time we share is always quality time.

In my free time, I enjoy cooking and horseback riding, and I like to try new activities and hobbies. And although I’m an active person, I also enjoy relaxed plans, such as watching series or movies, listening to music, or reading.

I want to do an exchange year in the USA because I want to discover different cultures, especially the American one. I find it interesting and very different from Spain. It has been my dream since I was a child, and I would love to make that childhood dream come true, grow mentally, and get to know a part of myself that I haven’t discovered yet.

I think I can bring different things to the family, such as sharing my Spanish culture and some traditional recipes from Spain. Personally, I can bring joy, fun, and a genuine desire to spend time together. I can teach you some activities from Spain, and you can teach me the most typical things in the USA—activities, food, culture, and hopefully many memories we can create together.

In the future, I want to study veterinary medicine because I love animals, and I think it’s very rewarding to be able to help them and make them feel better. It has been my dream since I was little, and since then, I’ve always been sure of what I wanted to dedicate myself to, and I don’t think anything or anyone will change my mind.

My goals during my year in the USA are to improve my English, be more sociable, become more independent (although I’m already quite independent), feel like one more American, overcome all the obstacles that come my way during my exchange year, and, most importantly, enjoy my experience as much as possible.

Thank you very much for reading my letter. I hope to fit into your family, and I am really looking forward to meeting you and sharing many experiences together.

Best regards,

Iker
